Audio system design and line-by-line mixing for Tempo Theatre Academy's 2026 production of Sister Act using a Waves LV1 console, M32 infrastructure, 24 radio microphones and a Turbosound Flashline Mini sound system.
Tempo Theatre Academy has become one of the productions I look forward to every year. Having worked with the academy for several years, it is always a pleasure to return and work alongside such a talented cast, creative team and production crew.
For the 2026 production of Sister Act in Wilmslow, I was responsible for the audio system design, programming and front of house mixing throughout the production.
The show featured 24 radio microphones, a live 10-piece band, personal monitoring for the musicians and stage foldback for the performers. Every performance required accurate line-by-line mixing to maintain clear dialogue while delivering the energy expected from a modern musical theatre production.
My control package was built around a Waves LV1 console running on an M32 infrastructure, allowing seamless integration with theatre control software while providing the workflow I have refined over a number of years of theatrical productions.
As part of my preparation, I multitrack record the full dress rehearsal before spending time replaying the show repeatedly through the console. This allows me to build muscle memory for every cue, vocal entrance and scene change before opening night, resulting in a more confident and consistent performance throughout the run.
Alongside the live mix, the production also included a number of programmed audio cues for sound effects and music, all integrated into the show to ensure smooth operation from beginning to end.
DG Sound & Light Ltd supplied the complete audio system while I provided the control package, programming and operation throughout the production. The PA system was a Turbosound Flashline Mini, which has proven to be an excellent loudspeaker system for musical theatre, delivering clear vocal reproduction and even coverage throughout the venue.
Working with the performers at Tempo Theatre Academy is always a highlight of the year. Their professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm, together with an experienced creative team, make every production a rewarding project and one I am always pleased to return to.
